Individual Versus Group Supervision - Which is Better?
Individual supervision and group supervision both have unique benefits and challenges, and the Psychology Board of Australia doesn't favor one over the other.
Your decision on which supervision type is best for you may depend on your preferences, budget, and comfort level. Here are some differences between the two:

Individual Supervision
Cost: $250 + GST (60 mins)
Pros:
- Provides more personalised attention and can be more in-depth and relevant to you and your caseload.
- Develop a meaningful supervisory relationship - you can build a strong relationship with your supervisor over time, which can lead to greater trust and insight.
- Explore transference and countertransference as they arise in your clinical work
- Create a professional development plan, keep on top of your internship requirements, and necessary documentation for submission to AHPRA
- Individual supervision may be best if you want to discuss personal issues you're uncomfortable sharing in a group.

Cons:
- More expensive which can be very challenging and important consideration especially if you are on an internship program where you have to complete a large volume of hours.
Group Supervision
Cost: $200 + GST (120 mins)
Pros:
- Provides access to multiple perspectives, and can be more affordable than individual supervision.
- Connect with other psychologists - learn from others, experience different styles, and work more systemically with your clients.
- Discover different modalities and populations.
- Feel less alone in your role as a psychologist
- Explore group dynamics - group supervision provides access to a diversity of reflections, feedback, and input, as well as the opportunity to experience others' styles.
- Learn different theoretical orientations, assessments and interventions
- Expand your networking opportunities

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Clinical Supervision for Provisional Psychologists & Clinical Registrars (Australia)
Who can provide supervision for Clinical Psychology endorsement?
Supervision must be provided by a Board-approved supervisor who holds the appropriate Area of Practice Endorsement (AoPE) for the pathway. For clinical registrars, supervisors must hold clinical endorsement. Krisite Clarke meets these requirements as she is a Board approved supervisor and holds clinical endorsement.
Can individual or group supervision be conducted online or via telehealth?
Yes. Supervision can be conducted via video or telephone, as long as it meets the requirements for effective and ethical supervision and is approved in the supervised practice plan.
Are there specific competencies that supervision must address during supervision?
Yes. Supervision must focus on developing the core competencies listed in the Internship or Registrar Program Guidelines, such as ethics, assessment, intervention, communication, and reflective practice.
Can a provisional psychologist have more than one supervisor?
Yes. A primary or principal supervisor must be appointed, but additional secondary supervisors may be included with Board approval. All supervisors must be Board-approved.
What happens if a supervisor is unavailable for an extended period?
If a supervisor becomes unavailable (e.g., due to leave or resignation), the supervisee must submit a variation to the Supervised Practice Plan and nominate a new supervisor as soon as possible.
Can supervision include observation or review of recorded sessions?
Yes. Individual Supervision sessions can include direct observation, including in-person or recorded client sessions, as long as clients have provided informed consent. This is particularly important for assessing competency in psychological interventions and communication.
Is there a required format or structure for supervision sessions?
Supervision must be structured, goal-directed, and based on a supervision contract. It should include review of casework, feedback, reflection, and discussion of ethical and professional issues.
What is the role of the primary or principal supervisor?
Your primary or principal supervisor is responsible for overseeing the entire supervision process, ensuring that the supervisee meets competency requirements, and that you submit all required documentation (e.g., progress reports, final reports) to AHPRA.
Can a supervisor provide supervision to multiple provisional psychologists?
Yes, a Board-approved supervisor can supervise more than one supervisee, but they must ensure that supervision quality and time commitments are not compromised. The number of supervisees should remain manageable and appropriate. Group supervision sessions are limited to a maximum of 5 participants in line with AHPRA requirements.
What happens if supervision is not completed correctly or requirements are not met?
If supervision requirements (e.g., hours, documentation, competency development) are not fulfilled, the Board may reject the application for general registration or endorsement, or request additional supervised practice.
